| Highlights
! This is no ordinary show! Appearing on this edition we have several vintage SJ tracks as well as a goodly number of all time favourites. Duncan Millar is on the show with a selection from Dream Your Dream. Bryan Savage and Paul Jackson Jr. give us some of their best. "Richards" Smith and Elliot team up on a great tune and as well we'll be hearing from Tom Coster and the group known as Windows. Janis Ian, Peter White and Richard Elliot all guest on this latter track. We have a few current favourites by Chris Standring, Bobby Lyle, Steve Briody, Marion Meadows and Les Sabler. There is new music from Juan Carlos Quintera and we've also included something from Leena Conquest, Gota, Rick Braun and Slim Man. Anyone can play the hits, you know it's true. | Showcase CD NY LA - Steve Cole : It was Steve's father, a clarinet and saxplayer, who first exposed Steve to Jazz in its many varied forms. Following his father's example, the younger Cole took up the sax around the seventh grade after briefly trying the clarinet. He studied the instrument all through high school and attended university to polish his technical skills. However, not being entirely sure about which career path to take, Cole for a time abandoned his musical training, enrolling in a course of studies prescribed for a BA in economics. After being in the world of high finance for a few years, and in fact continuing his education to acquire his MBA, Steve finally realized that his heart gravitated to the world of music, not business. He chose to return to the one true passion in his life, and to use an old cliché, he’s not looked back since. Early on he hooked up with fellow Chicagoan, Brian Culbertson. Cole played a significant part on two of Brian's hit cds and Culbertson obligingly returned the favour by helping on Steve's debut. Their partnership continues to the present as each regularly contributes to the projects of the other, including all the tracks that we’ve chosen for today’s feature. We begin with Love Letter, a tune that Culbertson co-wrote & produced. In addition, we have Missing You and Everyday. When you hear Steve play, I’m certain that you’ll agree, lucky for us that Cole dismissed his business aspirations and chose the sax instead of stocks! CD: NY LA |

Wonderland
- Tom Colclough : Long
regarded as one of the top session players in Vancouver, Colclough’s been
a fixture on the music scene in that city since the 80s. He’s contributed
to the projects of many contemporary artists such as Kat Hendrix and has
accompanied or recorded with a long list of top artists including Celine
Dion and David Foster. On occasion, he’s performed with the Vancouver
Symphony Orchestra, playing clarinet, and he also toured North America
a couple of years back as a performer in the stage production of Forever
Swing. In the process, Colclough’s distinctive playing has achieved considerable
recognition as he’s been the recipient of a West Coast Music Award on
a couple of occasions. Just out is Heading Home, the veteran player’s
independently produced debut cd, and from it we have the opening track.

My
House - Freddie Fox : Out
of Tullahoma, Tennessee comes Mr. Fox, who for the past eighteen years
has travelled the world touring with many top artists, (including Evelyn
"Champagne" King, who happens to be Mrs. Fox.) Freddie knew
at an early age that music would be his life. He’s been influenced by
many great guitarists such as Benson and Hendrix, and has also added trumpet,
keyboards, and bass guitar to his repertoire. He studied at the Berklee
College of Music for four years and then later followed that up with private
lessons. Definitely not lacking in musical credentials, Freddie has taken
part in dozens of sessions, done TV and film work, and produces and writes
music as well. Finally, finding the time to record his own solo project,
Freddie’s self-titled debut was released a short while ago. There's no
shortage of great music on this one, but for this occasion we've chosen
My House, an original composition that was also produced and arranged
by Freddie himself. So it's time to get ready for Freddie, Freddie Fox
that is!

on Track - Finger Roll : Dennis
Nelson is Finger Roll. Nelson first began refining his style as a guitarist
while earning a BA in Music at Southern University in Louisiana. Soon
after, he landed the guitar spot with Otis Day and the Knights and later
worked with The Temptations and the legendary Ray Charles, among others.
All of these varied experiences together with those in several Jazz and
Afro-Cuban projects have allowed Dennis to further hone his talents and
proficiency. Nelson’s fluid guitar work is now in demand for tours, record
dates, clinics and personal appearances. In addition, he’s developed as
a songwriter and producer and has also recorded three solo projects as
Finger Roll. (His sophomore release was nominated as the Best Independent
Jazz Record for 1998.) Back on Track is the latest of these. From that
effort we're featuring the title track.

City
Of Joy - Yulara : Although
named for a small village in Australia, the group hails from Germany.
Berlin natives, Robert Matt (keys & programming) and Annie Hilsberg
(flutes & saxes) first met in 1991 and shortly thereafter decided
to forge their musical identity as Yulara. The pair recorded their first
album in 1994 and since then have worked at refining & expanding their
organic blend of jazz, funk, dance and ambient grooves. To date, they’ve
issued several unique projects with Livin' in Peace being their 4th and
most recent effort. From that endeavour we'll be hearing the beautiful
City of Joy.

Magic
Motion - Roger Sause : Although
he may not be too well known outside of the music community, Sause was
one of the men that helped launch the career of Kenny G. From 1982 through
until 1987, Roger did double duty as the G-man’s keyboardist & musical
director, helping the saxman from Seattle assemble one of the most exhilarating
live shows in contemporary music. Now sixteen years after leaving the
fold so to speak, the Portland native reunites with several of his former
band mates. Adding a couple of high profile special guests, namely Gerald
Albright & Eric Marienthal, Sause creates Freestyle Funk, a highly
energetic affair and his debut effort as a solo artist. From that offering,
we have the lead track.

week we provide you with a reasonably short list of cds that we recommend
without hesitation. It's a bit longer than usual on this occasion, but
that's okay. There's "never too much" SJ for my liking. This
is music that you should not do without, and as such we rate these albums
as indispensable SJ listening. As is our custom, we're playing a track
from each on the show.
