There is nothing better than a pleasant surprise! That's exactly what lay in store for me last evening at the Nura concert in Oakville. Admittedly, I was not all that familiar with her music, let alone her debut CD, although I recognized a couple of tracks immediately, as I had done my listening homework earlier in the week. From the opening song (The Girl from Ipenema) to the upbeat closing selection (Here) which is scheduled to be on her next album, the show was enchanting. Throughout the evening, the tempos and moods changed frequently, providing us with the full range that this powerful performing partnership of Nura and Stuart Steinhart can deliver. |

Stuart, Nura's accredited composer, treated us to a masterful performance
on his 6-string bass guitar. We also heard several selections ( ' Same
City, Different World ' and ' Elegance ' to name a couple ) that will
be included on Stuart's imminent debut CD, titled Edification. Nura's
voice has an incredible range, and it perfectly suited the style changes
which occurred from song to song. And, here's an interesting tidbit
- did you know that 'More Lemons Please' is a song about eating lobster?
Listen to the lyrics, and you will hear that song differently (I used
to think there was some pretty risque prose being recited). Finally,
not to be overlooked were the other incredibly talented musicians that
completed the sound of the evening. Gordon Webster (piano) played several
'solo' riffs which reminded me of Keith Jarrett's Koln concert, where
everyone just held their breath as the music swept the audience away
somewhere. I can't recall a recent concert that I have enjoyed as much!!
In short, I LOVED it!! |
