Following the success of Russ Freeman's 1986 Nocturnal Playground debut, there was a fair degree of label interest in having him produce an album. Consequently, Freeman called on some friends, David Benoit, Gregg Karukas, Kenny G, Steve Reid, Dave Koz, Brandon Fields, and a few others, to see if they would be interested in taking part in a project. Into You - The Rippingtons:
Featured on our Best of '05 Review Part 2: Edition 392 - Jan. 15th, 2006
A few years back, band leader Russ Freeman helped launch the Peak Records label. That and a revamped line up have allowed this latest incarnation of The Rippingtons to maintain freshness in their sound and style. 1986 saw the release of their debut disc and now almost two decades later, Wild Card is the latest & 16th album overall. As with each of his projects, Freeman pushes the ensemble into new territory, this time enlisting the aid of a pair of Cuban Grammy-winning Latin salsa stars on a couple of tracks. Following the success of Russ Freeman's solo debut, there was a fair degree of interest in having Freeman produce an album. As such Freeman called upon a few friends, among them David Benoit, Gregg Karukas, Kenny G, Steve Reid, Dave Koz, and Brandon Fields; and asked if they would be interested in playing on the effort. At the time, they were all nurturing fledgling solo careers and so Freeman rather appropriately chose to title the project Moonlighting. The rest is history as The Ripps went on to become the top group in the 90s. Founded in 1987, The Rippingtons have enjoyed tremendous success as innovators in the smooth jazz arena ever since the release of Moonlighting, their groundbreaking debut. Their earliest efforts were primarily studio projects whose members included the likes of David Benoit, Kenny G, & Gregg Karukas. Since then, there have been several personnel changes. However, the band has not only maintained their popularity throughout the 90s, they've had several top charting albums & were also voted the #1 band in Smooth Jazz for both 2001 & 2002.
