Gregg Karukas featured on Then & Now: Edition 395 - February 19th, 2006
The idea that you could touch people's emotions thru music, grabbed Karukas when he was a teen and just wouldn't let go. For a while, the Bowie Maryland native entertained thoughts of becoming a vocalist, but when his voice changed, he shifted his focus to playing piano & organ. Gregg played in a variety of R&B bands before hearing Dave Brubeck's Take Five and Jazz Samba from Stan Getz. These ignited his interest in jazz and it wasn't too much later that he turned to the recordings of Miles Davis, Chick Corea, and Bill Evans. The latter of these together with Les Mc Cann, George Duke, Joe Sample, and perhaps a few others were among his biggest influences.... more about Gregg .

Deep Into You - Gregg Karukas:
Featured on our Best of '05 Review Part 1: Edition 390 - Jan. 1st, 2006

A perennial favourite on our show, Karukas delivered one of his finest overall performances to date in 2005. Although the track was starting to generate some excitement, Karukas decided to abandon its promotion in light of those tragic events. As a result, the cd lost a bit of all important momentum.

Nevertheless, there isn't a bad track on the record while the sequencing of the selections is particularly impressive! A slew of top flight talent ... read more.

Looking Up - Gregg Karukas:
Showcased on Edition 380 - October 16th, 2005

For a while he entertained thoughts of becoming a vocalist but when his voice changed his focus shifted to playing piano & organ.

As a teen, Gregg played in a variety of R&B bands before hearing Dave Brubeck's Take Five and Jazz Samba from Stan Getz. Deep Into You - Gregg Karukas:
Featured selection on The QR Edition 378 - October 2nd, 2005

Karukas found his way into the jazz clubs and studios of the Washington, DC - Baltimore area right out of high school & while still a teen. He quickly developed into one of the more highly regarded fusion and studio players around. In 1983, he moved to LA with the desire to play with as many other artists as possible in order to expand his keyboard style. Thanks to a recommendation by Russell Ferrante (whom he'd met years earlier while still playing on his home circuit), Karukas was soon performing with the likes of Patti Austin, Richard Elliot, Grant Geissman, & others. Following a 1-1/2 year stint backing Melissa Manchester, he started his own group. Dave Koz, Gary Meek and Boney James, were among the first young undiscovered sax talents to join his band. Gregg released his ... check the feature.
