Eyes are the window
through which we can view a person's soul. A person's eyes hold
nothing back - and through them you are able to witness joy, anger,
pain, vulnerability, and anything in between. As such, the focal
point of my work is the eyes. I feel that if I do my job properly
the very essence of the subject's being can be captured forever
in time on paper. Once captured it's job is to inspire, touch, and
allow the viewer to feel as the subject felt at that given moment.
It is only then that my job as an artist is truly complete.
Although Louie's eyes are indeed closed in this drawing, I feel
that they, in combination with the rest of his facial expression,
nonetheless convey a perfectly captured moment of almost childlike
bliss. The closed eyes in this picture thus do not prevent the drawing
from presenting the viewer with a full emotional experience that
is necessary for the connection between artwork and viewer to occur.
